BEIRUT, Lebanon – Arrest warrants were issued Saturday against four Lebanese pro-Syrian generals named as suspects in former Premier Rafik Hariri's (search) assassination, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported.
Lebanese investigating magistrate Elias Eid (search) issued the warrants after he had spent two days questioning the four generals, who led Lebanon's security services at the time that Hariri was killed.
The four are Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed, the former chief of General Security; Maj. Gen. Ali Hajj, the former director general of the Internal Security Forces; Brig. Gen. Raymond Azar, the former director general of military intelligence, and Brig. Gen., Mustafa Hamdan, the current commander of the Presidential Guards.
Eid's decision came after consulations with the country's Prosecutor-General Said Mirza who had issued preliminary criminal charges against the four generals.
Detlev Mehlis (search), the chief investigator leading a U.N. probe into Hariri's Feb. 14 murder in a Beirut bombing, has also named the four generals as suspects.
