Don't like your landlord? Better not "tweet" about it -- at least not in Chicago.
Horizon Group Management LLC filed a lawsuit Monday in Cook County Circuit Court seeking $50,000 in damages from Amanda Bonnen, a former tenant, according to numerous reports.
The company says Bonnen "maliciously and wrongfully" defamed it when she tweeted to a friend on May 12: "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay."
Horizon maintains that even though Bonnen had less than two dozen "followers" on her now-closed Twitter account, anyone could have seen her allegedly defamatory comment if they'd searched for her username, "abonnen."
"The statements in the Tweet concerning Plaintiff were and are wholly false," the complaint reads in part. "By reason of the publication of them, Plaintiff has been greatly injured in its reputation as a landlord in Chicago."
Jeffrey Michael, part of the family that runs Horizon, admitted to the Chicago Sun-Times that the company had never spoken to Bonnen about the alleged mold or about the Twitter complaint.
"We're a 'sue first, ask questions later' kind of an organization," he said.
