WASHINGTON – Former Congressman William Jefferson will not have his case reviewed by the Supreme Court, the justices announced Monday, which means his oft-delayed bribery trial will move forward.
Jefferson who was defeated for reelection in 2008 asked the Court to review his case in the hope the justices would eventually dismiss the charges against him.
The former Congressman from Louisiana was indicted on multiple counts of bribery and other charges after federal agents raided his home and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into freezer.
Jefferson argued that his 16 count indictment should be dismissed because he contends the government improperly presented evidence to a grand jury.
The Court’s decision not to hear the case was made as usual without comment. Jefferson’s trial is expected to start next month.
