BOSTON – A dramatic exchange between convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid and U.S. District Judge William Young took place Thursday afternoon.
After Judge Young imposed a sentence of life in prison, he pointed at Reid, saying "we are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mister Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before."
Reid's claims of being an enemy combatant were rejected by the judge, who said Reid was a terrorist, not a soldier in any war.
Continuing with a raised voice, the judge said America will hunt down others like Reid one by one and bring them to justice.
He asked Reid to search his heart and ask himself what sort of unfathomable hate led him to attempt blowing up the plane.
Judge Young then pointed to the American flag hanging on the wall behind him, saying it will fly there long after Reid is forgotten.
Reid shouted, leaned across the defense table, pointed at the flag and uttered something incomprehensible.
He then struggled while being led from the courtroom, yelling "you'll be judged by Allah" as he left.
