When Barack Obama named Joe Biden as his Democratic vice presidential running mate, some analysts believed that the longtime Delaware senator would offset Obama’s perceived weaknesses in overall experience and foreign policy.

It’s difficult to argue against Biden’s experience. He has been a member of the Senate since 1972 and is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. And born in Scranton, Penn. and grounded in blue-collar roots, some critics argued he could appeal to the work class voters Obama sought.

However, with 36 years in office, Biden arguably represents the old guard Obama has said he wants to change in Washington. Critics have said that Biden is a Washington insider and that Obama contradicted his own campaign mantra by picking Biden as his running mate. In addition, the Delaware senator is also known for his candor – he often sparks controversy with his outspoken comments.
