Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon are not engaged, Gyllenhaal's rep told USmagazine.com, saying that "The Daily Mail reports are false."
Last week the newspaper reported that the "Brokeback Mountain" actor, 27, and Witherspoon, 32, who met while filming the thriller "Rendition," were to be married this coming Christmas.
A source close to the actor said Gyllenhaal "told me he had proposed several times but she kept telling him she wanted to give their relationship more time. When he asked her again a couple of weeks ago, she finally said yes."
Though the actor's rep shot down rumors of an engagement, a source told USmagazine.com that the couple is getting more serious. Gyllenhaal has reportedly moved in with the Oscar-winning actress, and the couple recently returned from a European vacation with Witherspoon's children Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4.
"It was Jake's idea," said a friend of the actress. "Reese was willing to try it because Jake had assured her he is 100 percent committed for the long haul."
