PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Authorities in Haiti (search) are trying to determine whether an assault on a prison was an effort to break out two jailed allies of the country's former president.
As many as four heavily armed men attacked the national penitentiary in Port-Au-Prince (search) Saturday afternoon. One guard was killed and an undetermined number of prisoners escaped.
Jail guards rushed deposed president Jean Bertrand Aristide's (search) former prime minister and interior minister to an undisclosed location when prisoners began rioting.
Yvon Neptune and former Interior Minister Jocelerme Privert were accused of orchestrating killings of Aristide opponents during a February 2004 rebellion. Both men have professed their innocence.
The two men were later turned over to members of the United Nation's peacekeeping force.
