A 15-year-old girl was forced to have her leg amputated when doctors misdiagnosed her cancer as growing pains, London’s Daily Mail reported.

Shannon Corr complained of "agonizing" leg pain that made it difficult to walk for two months. She went to her doctor’s office several times, but he always told her she was just suffering "growing pains."

Shannon’s mother finally took her daughter to the hospital, pretending Shannon had fallen, and it was there that doctors discovered the teenager had osteosarcoma, which had already spread to the leg’s soft tissue.

"I want people to know that they need to push their doctors to get them the treatment they need to prevent this happening to anyone else," said Shannon, who lives in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire in the U.K.

"If they had taken me more seriously, then I might have been diagnosed sooner and things could have been different."

Shannon, a former cheerleader and dancer, is waiting to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.
