A 9-year-old girl has died and a second child was hospitalized after falling into an icy suburban Chicago pond.

Naperville fire officials say three cousins between 8 and 10 years old were playing on the frozen pond at a subdivision Thursday afternoon when the ice gave way, sending a boy and girl into the water. The third child ran for help.

Acting Assistant Fire Chief Dushan Budimir says witnesses saw the children throwing rocks onto the ice before venturing out onto it.

A neighbor pulled the boy from the water before rescue crews arrived, but Maheen Ahmad spent more than 15 minutes submerged. Both were taken to Edward Hospital.

The DuPage County Coroner's office says an autopsy is planned for Friday.
