Girl, 17, Wins Right to Have Breasts Removed
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A 17-year-old Australian girl has won the right to have her breasts surgically removed so that she can better resemble a boy, it was reported.
The teenager, only referred to as Alex, applied to the Family Court for permission to undergo a double mastectomy to make it easier for her to pass as a male, Agence-France Presse reported Monday.
The teenager, who was diagnosed with “gender identity dysphoria,” had been taking hormones to prevent menstruation since 2004, according to the report.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Court chief justice Diana Bryant said the court decided to allow the breast removal because evidence from medical experts, Alex's counselor and an independent children's lawyer "overwhelmingly" backed the move.
