Chancellor Angela Merkel says Germany is not ready to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Merkel told reporters Tuesday that Germany would await the results of an international conference on Afghanistan to be held next month in London before deciding whether to commit more forces.

Around 4,000 German soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led force. The German parliament plans to extend their mandate later this week without allowing for any additional troops.

President Barack Obama is expected to outline the new U.S. war plan that will include between 30,000 and 35,000 more American troops. Obama will speak with Merkel by phone before his speech Tuesday night.
