The German navy has handed nine suspected Somali pirates captured in the Gulf of Aden to Kenya for prosecution.

Kenya's Marine Police Commandant Stanley Lenamai says after translators are found the suspects will be taken to court immediately.

The nine were arrested last week when they tried to attack a merchant ship.

Their arrival in Kenya on Tuesday brings to 24 the number of suspected pirates who have been handed over to Kenya by foreign navies since last year.

The EU and Kenya agreed Friday to allow the country to prosecute suspected pirates captured by European forces. The U.S. and Britain have a similar agreement with Kenya.
