French law enforcement officials say they have detained 14 illegal migrants from Afghanistan discovered in a refrigerator truck on a northern highway.

Prosecutors in a northern French town said Thursday that two of the detainees were suffering from hypothermia and were sent to a local hospital.

Traffic police detained the migrants, tipped by the truck driver who noticed suspicious noise coming from the vehicle.

Prosecutors believe the group boarded the truck in the northern port city of Calais, hoping to cross the English Channel and end up in Britain. But the truck instead traveled south with the refrigerator turned on.

Authorities were checking the migrants' health and trying to find a translator to interrogate them.
