France's ecology minister says she wants an investigation into reports that French nuclear waste has been sent to Russia for storage in open-air parking lots.

Chantal Jouanno said Tuesday on France-Info radio that the country's nuclear energy industry "must be completely transparent."

She was responding to reports in newspaper Liberation and Franco-German television Arte saying France stores 13 percent of its radioactive waste in Seversk in Siberia.

French electricity company EDF said it sends uranium left over from nuclear plant production in France to Russia to be treated so that it can be used again. A company official denied that waste was left outdoors.

The reports say most of the used uranium cannot be recycled and remains in Russia.
