France Chides Medvedev Over Missiles Threat to Poland

PARIS – France says the European Union is "deeply concerned" about a threat by Russia to deploy short-range missiles near Poland.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the comments by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev this week "do not contribute to the establishment of a climate of trust and the improvement of security in Europe."

Medvedev responded to U.S. proposals on missile defense by threatening to deploy Iskander missiles to Russia's western enclave of Kaliningrad between Poland and Lithuania.

France currently holds the EU presidency.
