A former high school teacher in New York has been rearrested a day after being sentenced for having a long-running affair with a 16-year-old student.

Heather Kennedy was released on $15,000 bail after her arraignment Saturday on criminal contempt charges.

A prosecutors' spokesman says the new charges reflect letters Kennedy wrote the boy while jailed on earlier charges stemming from their relationship. A court had ordered her to avoid contact with him.

A defense lawyer says Kennedy has since realized the romance isn't viable.

After her earlier arrest, the former High School math teacher pleaded guilty to rape and other offenses. She was sentenced Friday to the six months in jail she had served, the Newsday newspaper reported.
