The Oseola County Sheriff's Department is hoping the high price of gas will be a reason for many to turn in their unwanted guns and make Florida streets a little safer.

Every person who turns in a gun to the department Thursday — no questions asked — will receive a $50 gas card, MyFOXOrlando.com reported.

"Gas is such a commodity that the sheriff's office felt it would be very popular and hopefully encourage those citizens to come out," Twis Lizasuain, a department spokesperson, told MyFOXOrlando.com. "We are encouraging citizens to bring in unwanted handguns so that those handguns don't fall into the wrong hands."

Weapons should be placed in a plastic bag and unloaded.

It is the first time the sheriff's office sponsored such a program.
