An inmate raped and murdered a female corrections officer at a prison in Daytona Beach, Fla., according to police.

Enoch Hall, 39, attacked Officer Donna Fitzgerald, 50, Wednesday night while she was on duty at Tomoka Correctional Institution, the state Department of Corrections reported.

"Words cannot express the sorrow I feel over the loss of our correctional officer," Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil told MyFOX Orlando. "The entire department grieves the murder of one of our finest officers, and we pray for the victim’s family during this difficult time."

Fitzgerald, of Port Orange, Fla., had worked at the prison for 13 years.

State prison records show that Hall is already serving two life sentences for sexual battery with a weapon and kidnapping convictions from a 1993 case.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the attack. No charges have been filed.

Hall will be transferred to the Florida state prison in Starke, a standard procedure after an assault on prison staff.

Tomoka Correctional Institution houses about 1,200 adult male inmates.
