City officials say a Renaissance fort that offers a spectacular view of Florence has been temporarily closed after a woman fell to her death from its ramparts.

Alessandra Garzanti from the Florence City Hall says the Forte Belvedere was shut down pending an investigation into the death of 37-year-old Veronica Locatelli who fell 10 meters from the fort's walls late Tuesday.

Garzanti says the investigation is trying to determine whether danger signs were correctly placed and the ramparts were adequately illuminated.

Garzanti said Thursday that a Rome student also died falling from the fort in 2006.

Built in the 16th century, the fort near the central Boboli Gardens now hosts concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events.
