OTTAWA – The trial of the first man to be charged under Canada's Anti-Terrorism Act is under way in an Ottawa courtroom that has stepped up its security measures to prepare for the landmark case.
Momin Khawaja is a 29-year-old software developer, is accused of being a part of an al-Qaida-inspired cell that plotted bombings in Britain in 2004. He faces seven counts of terrorist-related offenses that could put him in prison for life if convicted.
Six other men were convicted last year in London. Khawaja was named in connection with the plot in the London case that was thwarted by British authorities, but he was not charged in the U.K.
He was arrested in March, 2004, and his trial is expected to last at least six months.
