SOUTHPORT, Ind. – A truck driver was fatally impaled by a fence post early Tuesday when his tractor trailer veered off Interstate 65 south of Indianapolis.
Elvin Stanley, 47, of Chicago was pronounced dead at the scene, Indiana State Police said.
His blue 2006 International tractor trailer was heading south on I-65 around 1 a.m. when it left the road, went down a small embankment and hit some trees. It then drove through a fence before stopping behind a business.
A fence post flipped up and crashed through the truck's windshield, impaling Stanley, police said.
State police fielded no other reports of cars sliding off the highway in that area, so slick roads probably did not cause the accident, state police Sgt. Anthony Emery said. Driver fatigue might have been a factor. An autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed on Stanley.
Emery said he didn't know what the 18-wheeler was hauling or where it was heading.
