Police say a man has been charged with child neglect for allegedly falling asleep and allowing his unattended 4-year-old daughter to ride her tricycle in traffic.

Twenty-five-year-old William L. Shogren, of Jonesborough, was arrested on the charge and later released on a $25,000 bond.

Police say they received a call Thursday morning from someone who spotted the girl riding on a road about a half mile from her home. The road is not a main arterial, but there was traffic when the girl was found.

Washington County sheriff's chief deputy Patrick Li ttleton said when police brought the girl home, Shogren came to the door and looked as if he'd been sleeping. He thought his daughter was in a bedroom watching television.

Police contacted the girl's mother, who had another child at the doctor's office. When she returned home, the 4-year-old was turned over to her.
