An explosive device hit a U.S. convoy near the rebel-held city of Fallujah (search), killing one soldier from the 13th Corps Support Command and wounding two, the military said in a statement Thursday.

The attack happened Wednesday night, the statement said. No further information was provided about the incident.

All three soldiers were wounded in the blast, but one later died of his injuries at a military hospital in the capital, Baghdad. The other two remain at the hospital. One is listed in serious condition and the other stable.

The named of the dead soldier was withheld pending notification of the family. The attack is being investigated.

As of Wednesday, 1,064 members of the U.S. military had died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to the U.S. Defense Department (search). Of those, 809 died of hostile action. The figures include three military civilians.
