Gay couples may make better parents than heterosexual mothers and fathers who don't measure up to the responsibility of having children, Rosie O'Donnell says in an interview Monday night on The O'Reilly Factor.
"Every homosexual who has a child really wants that child, by a large degree," O'Donnell tells Factor host Bill O'Reilly. "Heterosexuals make worse parents, because there are half a million kids in foster care ... not every one of those children that were born to them were wanted."
When asked by O'Reilly whether it's appropriate for a child to be placed into a home that many Americans would consider "sinful," O'Donnell tells the host of The Factor she can't understand that point of view.
"I want the same standard applied to homosexuals as is applied to heterosexuals," she says. "If you are a good, capable, loving parent, and you fit what this child needs, you should be allowed to take that child, whether or not you're homosexual."
In a wide-ranging interview, the talk show host and comedienne turned gay adoption advocate also talks about her frustration with other celebrities' slow reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks, and how she stopped being "myopic" in terms of her political agenda.
"My entire worldview changed," after Sept. 11, O'Donnell says. "If you would have told me on Sept. 9th that I would have been at the World Series thumbing George Bush throwing out the first pitch with my six-year-old son crying, I never would have believed you."
