William Bennett is co-director of Empower America, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C.
Bennett served in the Bush administration as director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy from March 1989 through November 1990. Prior to being named "drug czar," he served as President Reagan's Secretary of Education between 1985 and 1988.
Bennett also served in 1981 as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities during the Reagan administration.
He has written extensively on social and domestic issues and is the author of seven books: Counting by Race, Our Children and Our Country, The De-Valuing of America, The Book of Virtues, The Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, The Moral Compass and The Children's Book of Virtues.
In addition to his work with Empower America, Bennett co-chairs the National Commission on Civic Renewal and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. He is also a member of the board of directors of two Internet companies.
