NEW YORK – A New York school bus driver was arrested Wednesday after he vanished for hours with several kindergarten and first-grade students on board, the New York Post reported.
The driver, who allegedly circled Brooklyn for nearly five hours while carrying about a dozen young school children, has been suspended.
Authorities say Joseph Gray, 53, claimed he had gotten lost Wednesday while ferrying the children from Brooklyn's Achievement First Brownsville Charter School to their homes.
Parents said their children were shaken by the ordeal that ended when police were called and were finally able to reach the driver.
"Anything could have happened," Madinat Koroma, the mother of one of the missing children, told the Post.
Though he was arrested, the Brooklyn district attorney's office has decided not to prosecute the driver.
The company Gray worked for, Lonero Transit Inc., says it is trying to determine what happened with the driver. A lawyer for the company calls the man's behavior "bizarre."
