'Dog Whisperer' Cesar Millan

JOHN GIBSON, HOST: Cesar Millan, otherwise known as the "Dog Whisperer," works his magic to help folks get along with man's best friend. In addition to helping many celebrities like Oprah and Will Smith with their dogs, he's also treated canine victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Cesar Millan joins us now along with Scarlet to talk about his rehab methods.

So, how do you get a dog to start acting like a dog is supposed to?

CESAR MILLAN, HOST, "DOG WHISPERER": Well, the most important part that I teach people is exercise, discipline and affection. Most of the people like to give affection, affection, affection. So I will say that that's the beginning. You know that we have to learn to fulfill their needs, not only our needs.

GIBSON: How do you give affection to the dog while at the same time teaching them they just did something you don't want them to do anymore?

MILLAN: Well, first of all, make them work for the affection. So, one of the things that I teach people in the show is to master the walk. The walk is very important for a dog. Humans have to be in front of the walk. The dog has to be next to you or behind. After you finish this exercise, then you give affection.

GIBSON: So what was the problem with the dog you've got in your lap?

MILLAN: Oh, Scarlet? Scarlet almost killed a Chihuahua. But now she's balanced, you know. I know she looks like an angel right now, but she was pretty bad. And that's because she was she wasn't getting enough rules, boundaries, limitations. The human of the previous owner was not the pack leader.

GIBSON: So, Cesar, do you have to learn to think like a dog?

MILLAN: I think you have to learn how to fulfill a dog, not so much to become a dog, just to learn how they do it to each other, how they fulfill each other. You know, in a pack of dogs, the mother is the first pack leader and then it's the male who runs the pack. And one thing that we have a tendency to forget is that dogs are pack-oriented animals and they need a pack leader.
