An American fugitive accused of poisoning his wife with cyanide is returning to the United States to face murder charges.

Yazeed Essa was escorted by two FBI agents onto an aircraft at Larnaca Airport and left the island early Friday, according to his Cypriot lawyer, Soteris Argyrou.

Essa, a 39-year-old doctor, disappeared in March 2005 before his indictment on aggravated murder charges regarding his wife Rosemarie, who died near their home in Gates Mills, outside Cleveland.

Essa was arrested in October 2006 in Cyprus as he arrived from Beirut. He gave up a drawn out court fight against his extradition to the U.S. last month when he agreed to return to Ohio.
