A Detroit community is mourning the loss of a high school football player who died after suffering a hit during a game.

Derek Greca, a senior at Huron High School, suffered a ruptured small intestine when he was hit hard after catching a pass at a game last month, MyFoxDetroit.com reported. He battled an infection for five weeks before it claimed his life.

A spirit rock was placed next to the football field with Greca’s football number and the words, “Gone but not forgotten.”

“Derek was the kind of kid you wanted your daughter to bring home,” Huron High School Principal Rod Hopper told MyFoxDetroit. “He was a great all-around guy, and he will be sorely missed.”
