SAN MARINO, Calif. – Homicide investigators have converged on a San Marino home with ground-penetrating radar to determine if the bones of a long-vanished couple may be buried in the backyard.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said sheriff's and coroner's officials arrived Friday morning and plan to use the radar to scan the yard for anomalies.
Newlyweds Jonathan and Linda Sohus lived in the home before vanishing in 1985. Nine years later, workers building a pool for the new owners unearthed a man's bones that remain unidentified.
The investigation was reignited this month with the kidnapping arrest in Baltimore of "Clark Rockefeller," who once lived in a guest house on the San Marino property.
Police say Rockefeller is really a German immigrant named Christian Gerhartsreiter.
Gerhartsreiter has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping his daughter, Reigh Boss, on a Boston street during a supervised visit in July after losing custody of her to his ex-wife, Sandra Boss.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has labeled Gerhartsreiter a "person of interest" in the Sohus case, but he has refused to talk to their investigators.
However, Gerhartsreiter's not been charged with any California crime.
