Chattanooga police say the 1-year-old child injured when his father flipped his speeding car has now died, and authorities plan to file charges against the father.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen say the charges will be filed against 27-year-old Pierre Hereford, who police say smelled of alcohol after he crashed his 1998 Chrysler on Wednesday.

The child suffered serious head trauma. Hereford was treated at a Chattanooga hospital after the crash. Noorbergen reported "there was a gross misuse of the child-restraint device."

Hereford was allegedly speeding when he went off the left side of the road and struck the embankment where Williams Street crosses under U.S. Highway 27.
