WATERBURY, Conn. – A Connecticut man convicted of raping a 17-month-old girl has been sentenced to 55 years in prison.
Thirty-five-year-old Edwin Martinez was sentenced Monday for the sexual assault of the girl two years ago. The prosecutor says the attack was brutal, savage and heinous.
In June, a jury found Martinez guilty of five charges, including two counts of rape. He was charged with raping the toddler at his girlfriend's home while she was baby sitting the girl.
The prosecutor said the girl was dropped off in the morning in good physical condition, but by the time her father picked her up at about 4 p.m. she showed signs of an assault.
The girl was brought to a hospital for treatment of injuries that included bruising to her ankles, arms, ears and face and other physical signs of rape.
Investigators gathered DNA evidence from the home connecting Martinez to the rape, but Martinez maintains he's innocent.
