DUBUQUE, Iowa – More information is expected to be released today on the death of a Loras College student from an apparent case of bacterial meningitis.
Preliminary autopsy results found that 19-year-old Audrey Fitzgerald of Independence died of the infection, which affects the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain.
Fitzgerald was found Sunday evening in her dorm room on the Dubuque campus.
Bacterial meningitis is spread by contact with mucus or droplets from the nose and throat of the infected person.
The college and public health officials are working to contact all those who may have been exposed.
