The Coast Guard has suspended a search for a 50-year-old pilot who lost communication after leaving Florida in a single-engine airplane.

The Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile had conducted three search patterns over an area larger than Rhode Island to search for Mark Nichter. The search was suspended around 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Coast Guard had gotten a call from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center around 4 p.m. Thursday saying Nichter had lost radio communication after taking off from St. Petersburg, Fla.
