WASHINGTON – A long line greeted former President Bill Clinton (search) in New York City for his book signing on Tuesday, and books flew off the shelves in Washington, D.C., and Arkansas. But not everyone in line was a fan of the president.
"Just going through the index I was struck by the names that are not listed in there, especially people from the Communist Chinese fund-raising scandal from 1996, people like James Riady (search) and Johnny Chung (search). They're not in the index," said Clinton critic Kristinn Taylor, referring to two businessmen at the center of a 1996 campaign donation scandal.
Reviewers describe the book as a meandering memoir full of dense public policy talk, a gentle critique of Vice President Al Gore's (search) presidential campaign, tougher criticism of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (search) and icy denunciations of his political rivals.
In the book, Clinton also confirms Monica Lewinsky's (search) account of the start time of their affair, admitting that it started in November of 1995, when she was a White House intern. This contradicts Clinton's grand jury testimony, in which he said the affair didn't begin until early 1996.
