Just a week after Nissan introduced the only car in America priced under $10,000, Hundai has downed the ante.
Announcing a sticker price of $9970 for the 2009 Hyundai Accent GS, the Korean subcompact undercuts the $9990 Nissan Versa Sedan by a now impressive $20. An identical Accent sold in 2008 for $11,070.
Both cars do without standard air conditioning, power windows, power locks, or stereos, though they do come with speakers in case you want to add your own. All of the above are available as options, and you can add an automatic transmission to either car for around $1,000.
In a model year where automakers have raised prices on nearly every vehicle, it is yet to be seen if the Accent and Versa price drops are anomalies, or the beginning of a race to the bottom. Last year’s cheap champ, the Chevy Aveo, now looks like a luxury at $12,625.
