AACHEN, Germany – Prosecutors have read out the indictment against a former member of Hitler's Waffen SS at his trial on charges he murdered three Dutch civilians in reprisal for partisan attacks during World War II.
Heinrich Boere's attorneys acknowledge their client confessed to the killings while in captivity after the war in the Netherlands and in later media interviews. They have not said how they will counter those statements in Aachen state court.
The 88-year-old Boere, sitting in a wheelchair, showed no reaction Monday as prosecutors read out the indictment. The trial started last week.
Boere faces life in prison if convicted of the 1944 killings.
Boere apologized for the killings in a 2007 interview, saying it was "another time, with different rules."
