TORONTO – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed Thursday that a 50-month-old dairy cow has tested positive for mad cow disease.
The animal was first reported on Monday to have the disease after preliminary reports. The entire carcass has been incinerated and did not enter the human or animal feed system, government officials told a news conference.
It becomes the country's seventh case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and comes on the heels of Canada's sixth confirmed case of the disease last week.
The cow, part of a herd of 300 head of cattle on an Alberta dairy farm, is among 170 other animals that will be tested.
