A store clerk and her husband are facing charges over the alleged embezzlement of $1.3 million from a San Jose hardware store.

Santa Clara County prosecutors say 36-year-old Desiree Herrera and 37-year-old Ruben Herrera are both expected to be arraigned Thursday after being charged with grand theft, money laundering and filing a false income tax return.

Investigators say Desiree Herrera embezzled the money from County Building Materials, which operates as Payless Hardware and Rockery, while she worked as an accounts receivable clerk at the store between 2002 and 2009.

Ruben Herrera is accused of laundering the money through the couple's bank account.

The Herraras are also accused by the state Franchise Tax Board of owing more than $182,000 in unpaid taxes and penalties.
