A law student with a prosthetic arm who said she was removed from working with customers because of her handicap has won a legal victory in her case against clothing shop Abercrombie and Fitch.
The student was born with her left forearm missing and was initially allowed to wear a cardigan to work on the shop floor to cover up her fake arm.
The 22-year-old was then told she'd have to work in the back of the store away from customers because her cardigan went against Abercrombie & Fitch's dress code.
A tribunal ruled the student was wrongfully dismissed and unlawfully harrassed, however rejected her claims the shop discriminated against her disability.
She was awarded $12,931 compensation for emotional trauma, more than $1,657 for loss of earnings and $226.67 for wrongful dismissal.
The tribunal panel found that she felt "humiliated" and suffered a "loss of confidence" after being dismissed from her job.
