Brazilian Convicted of Killing, Cutting Up British Teen

A Brazilian man has been convicted of killing a British teenager, cutting up her body and stuffing her torso in a suitcase before dumping it.

Mohamed D'Ali Carvalho dos Santos was jailed for 21 years for murdering Cara Marie Burke and then hiding her body in the south American countrylast July.

The 21-year-old confessed to killing Cara, 17, from Southfields, south west London, while high on crack cocaine and cooking gas.

His girlfriend and mother of their one-month-old baby, Helen de Matos Victoria, told the court in the city of Goiania he had behavioural problems but she had never feared for her life.

The 19-year-old said she had met Burke but was unable to communicate because of the language barrier.

Police said Santos stabbed Burke to death on July 26, 2008, after she threatened to tell his parents he was a drug-dealing cocaine addict.

He described to the court how she tried to grab the knife as he stabbed her.

"I don't remember where I stabbed," Santos said. "I kept on stabbing away, not knowing where, and when I saw what I had done, she was dead."

He then allegedly took a photo of her corpse with his mobile phone before going to an all-night party.

When he returned to his apartment, prosecutors said, he used a carving knife to dismember her and dispose of the body.

He is alleged to have sent his brother a text message saying, "the bitch is in the bag."

Burke's torso was recognized by a friend in Britain who identified a tattoo in a TV report.

Her torso was found in a suitcase dumped on a rural riverbank near Goiania in July.

Officers then spent the next few days searching for the teenager's head, arms and legs. They recovered the last part of her body in a river on August 6.
