How should young teenagers with serious gender identity disorders be treated?
Some experts believe they should be given drugs to block puberty, the BBC reported.
Draft guidelines by the U.S. Endocrine Society say the move would give young, transsexual teens the time they need to decide which gender they want to live as.
The guidelines state: "We recommend that adolescents who fulfill eligibility and readiness criteria for gender reassignment initially undergo treatment to suppress pubertal development."
The findings are based on work at a Netherlands clinic where 70 teenagers were successfully treated, according to the report.
"We don't have any patient who has regretted their decision on the treatment," said Henriette Delemarre-van de Waal, who helped treat the teenagers, in a news release.
The youngest patient treated at the Dutch clinic was 11, but most are 12 or older, the BBC reported.
