Baltimore public school officials say a female middle school student who was diagnosed with swine flu has died.

Schools CEO Andres Alonso said officials learned of the Montebello Elementary-Middle School student's death on Wednesday. They aren't releasing any further details to protect her privacy.

Alonso said in a statement that the school system is working with the city health department to keep students and their families informed about appropriate precautions for protecting against the spread of flu.

Maryland had reported eight deaths linked to swine flu as of Friday. State health officials have not yet confirmed another death.
