Today Dell Computer company is recalling four million laptop batteries because they might explode and catch on fire. There's even pictures of these things catching on fire.
First thing I thought this morning was, "Oh great, you can't bring liquids on the plane anymore and now the guy with the laptop next to me is on fire and I've got nothing to douse it out with."
Seriously, is this a problem?
Well a guy in Arizona says his laptop battery caught fire after he put it in the backseat of his vintage pickup. Then a stash of ammunition exploded in the glove compartment while he ran from the flames and bullets.
In 2004 and 2005, Apple, Dell and HP recalled more than 300,000 laptop batteries due to fire hazards. And the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented 339 cases of overheating laptop batteries causing fires.
On May 15 a laptop caught fire while stored in the overhead bin of a Lufthansa airliner which was luckily still on the ground at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. And earlier this year a UPS plane caught fire in Philadelphia and a shipment of batteries was suspected to be the cause.
So guess what?
The National Highway Transportation Safety Commission is thinking about tightening rules for bringing these battery devices on board commercial airlines. No liquids, no batteries.
For those who have to fly it's going to be back to a good book and try to get some sleep.
After all, first, we don't want crashes, and second, we don't want to be blaming an air crash on terrorism when it really was an overheated laptop.
