VIENNA, Austria – Vienna prosecutors will decide whether to formally charge the leader of a right-wing party who allegedly injured a police officer with his car after a Euro 2008 football match.
Police said Tuesday they recommended charges against Peter Westenthaler over the incident June 16. They say he was leaving a parking lot near Ernst Happel Stadium after watching the Austria-Germany match.
The road was temporarily blocked to allow German chancellor Angela Merkel's motorcade to pass and the officer prevented Westenthaler from moving. Police say Westenthaler then bumped into the officer and injured his knee. Prosecutors are investigating the accusations.
Westenthaler, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Austria, denies the allegations.
