An Australian surgical team claims to have performed the world's first conscious brain surgery, the French news agency AFP is reporting.

Using "cutting edge" technology, the surgeons were able to perform life-saving brain surgery while the man conversed with the medical team, doctors said during a news conference in Canberra, Australia.

Also speaking during the news conference, the patient, John James said it was a strange experience to listen to the doctors and nurses talking as he lay on the operating table with a half-inch hole in his head.

The surgery, performed in April, removed an aneurysm from James' brain.
