Authorities in Ouachita County said Tuesday they are investigating what led to the death of a man witnesses said hit his head while getting out of a hot tub.

David Herman Dawson, 46, of Stephens died over the weekend after being transferred to a Little Rock hospital, Ouachita County Sheriff Paul Lucas.

After Dawson was hurt early Sunday, witnesses told sheriff's deputies that Dawson hit his head while climbing out of a hot tub. The same witnesses did not show up for later interviews, the sheriff said.

"We're not calling it a homicide, but the death is suspicious and under investigation," Lucas said.

A police report said hospital workers told deputies Dawson had several bruises on his body in addition to a severe injury to the back of his head.

The body was sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for an autopsy.
