PHOENIX – Gov. Janet Napolitano says Congressman Rick Renzi should resign from office.
The Democratic governor says federal criminal charges against the Arizona Republican effectively deprive residents of Renzi's 1st Congressional District of representation.
Napolitano notes that Renzi stopped serving on committees while under investigation, and she says the new indictment will be a further distraction.
The charges accuse Renzi of embezzling money from his insurance agency to help pay for his first campaign and of using his office to promote a land deal that would financially benefit both himself and a former business associate.
Renzi says he won't resign and will stay in office while his defense lawyers fight the charges.
