Apple said Wednesday that it had opened its PC recycling program to the general public, allowing consumers to send back any make or model of PC, free of charge, provided that they purchase a new Macintosh.
Apple originally announced the plan in April, which is open to customers in the continental United States.
When a customer chooses to participate in the program, Apple will send an email with instructions and a label for free shipping and recycling, the company said. Customers will need to package their recyclable equipment and attach the label provided. All equipment received by the program is recycled domestically and no hazardous material is shipped overseas, Apple said.
Apple already runs a recycling program for its iPods, which allows customers a 10 percent discount when they drop off an older model, and purchase a new one.
