SAO PAULO, Brazil – Brazilian police on Monday arrested an American man who fled to the South American country nine years ago to avoid child pornography charges, authorities said.
Kenneth Andrew Craig, 40, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro in an operation involving U.S. authorities and Interpol, Brazil's federal police said in a statement.
Police said he was found after his parents arrived in Brazil to visit him.
The U.S. Embassy said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that Craig "is wanted to stand trial on charges relating to promotion of sexual performance by a child, a child pornography offense, in Florida."
It added that Craig's extradition will be requested.
Craig could not be immediately reached for comment and it was not known if he had a lawyer representing him.
Brazilian authorities were investigating whether he committed any crimes in Brazil.
"Police seized a computer and several CDs in his apartment and will analyze them to see if there is any content related to the crimes he is being accused of," Rio de Janeiro state prosecutor Ana Lucia Melo said.
Craig was arrested in 1999 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, after police allegedly found him in a hotel room with two underage boys, Brazilian police said in the statement. He allegedly filmed the two youngsters having sex.
Craig was released from prison on bail paid by a woman identified by authorities as Eva Corn, who allegedly helped him flee to Brazil, the police statement said.
He was believed to be working as an English teacher in Brazil.
